V4's will make any marshall sound thin. although, if you prefer the marshall sound, you might be equally as inclined to think that a marshall will make any V4 sound 'boomy'. the V4 does not have the same 'crunch' sound to the gain that the marshall has. it ends up sounding a bit more muddy than crunchy as you turn it up. the tone controls make the amp incredibly versatile. they are active, which is to say...w/ the controls on 5 the EQ is flat. so you have the option of cutting a frequency or boosting a frequency. w/ a marshall amp, the tone controls are passive...so you only have the option of boosting frequencies. anyway...a V4 will never break up the same way a marshall does, they're just two different animals. but if you set the bass and volume(full sensitivity) on the ampeg to about 10 o'clock, and boost the treble(ultra-hi switch to taste,i prefer it in the middle) and mids(1000hz) to about 2 o'clock. you should be in relative marshall territory w/ some humbuckers. throw a tube screamer in front and you should have no problem tweaking a little here and there to obtain marshall crunch. it's also my opinion that V4's sound really good w/ "marshall" speakers. you probably have celestion g12-65's in that '79 marshall cab. i used to own a cab like that, and i thought the ampeg sounded good.
