i would say to leave the tubes alone. you'll have to open the amp up and connect the send and return RCA cables together. if youcan rig a male-to-male coupler w/ some radio shack parts for a few bucks, then you can plug the send RCA into one side, and the return RCA into the other and see if you like it before you resolder anything in the amp. there's no way your ampeg will turn into a mesa dula rectifier or anything by doing this. it will simply increase the type of gain you already hear. which is much more of a vintage flavor, and honestly...i think you'll probably find it turns the tone to mud and it will hum like a bastard before it will make anything sound better. i did the same trick w/ my dad's silver face twin reverb several years ago. only it's a lot easier on that amp because everything is located externally. you just have to link the reverb jacks w/ a standard RCA cable. but anyway...it didn't give me any usable gain. it just hummed and sounded shitty. if you're looking for more gain in a rock or metal aplication, you're probably better off getting a pedal. for rock i would suggest an ibanez tube screamer or a boss SD-1. for metal i would suggest a STAMPEDE pedal. (i forget who makes them, i believe they're japanese. but they sound great for metal in the vein of CONVERGE or MASTODON)
