my V2 is early 70's and it's 10.25" high (including feet), 11.25" deep, and 23.75" wide. an ampeg beats the pants off of a fender bassman in my opinion hands down. i own a '67 50w blackface bassman, and it sounds great. especially w/ a tube screamer in front of it. but there's something definitively generic about the sound. an ampeg on the other hand has active tone controls, so you have far more versatility in tone shaping. and it takes pedals VERY well. as for the differences between early 70's vs later 70's models...there are some models which feature a "distortion" circuit which is controlled by a knob right next to the volume knob. these models are considered inferior to the standard model (i'm talking about V4's and V2's here...they are the same amp except for 100w vs 50w. and yeah...those are conservative wattage ratings.) otherwise the later 70's models typically have a master volume knob. which is great if you need to control your volume and still want that pre-amp grind you can only get by cranking the dials. also , in my experience (for whatever reason,i don't know...) the later 70's models seem to stay cleaner further up the dial than the early 70's counterparts. i've owned five V2's and VT40's(4x10 V2 combo), and i've owned five V4's and VT22's(2x12 V4 combo)...the info presented here is pretty definitive. but i'm basing this all on my ear and personal experience, not tech and spec-sheet stats. so there's plenty of room for error.
