I have an Ampeg V-4b from 71 or 72. I retubed it back when i got it and had an adjustable bias installed. I would play the amp daily and play shows with it weekly or biweekly. There was one week when I played it really hard (played with two guitars plugged into it with volume cranked). i probably should not have done this. There was a point during this week when it was on and there was no load (it was only for a couple of seconds). So the following week I got to practice with me main project and after a couple of hours of regular practice the tubes began running EXTREMELY hot. I did not realize it until I began to smell what seemed like solder. I immediately turned it off. When i got it back home i opened it up to see if I oculd visibly see any problems. The only thing that I could tell that looked amiss was the adjustable bias pot. The parts of it that were made of plastic were melted. I took it into a local reputable repair shop and they looked it over. There diagnosis was that I need to have all my caps, some resistors, and maybe some tubes replaced. The bill would be $300. I am somewhat of a novice when it comes to vintage tube amps, but this didn't sound right to me. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what the problem could be or if this place was correct in there diagnosis Thanks.
